Profile

Mr Guerin is a consultant eye surgeon at Charter Medical Private Hospital and at the Mater Private Hospital, Dublin.
Attaining an honours medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (MB BCh BAO LRCP&SI) in 2002, Mr. Guerin also studied law at the Honourable Society of Kings Inns, Dublin and graduated as a Barrister- at- law (BL) with honours in 2000. He is the only person to simultaneously study law at Kings Inns and medicine, and retains a significant academic interest in medical law. He has also completed an honours degree in Civil Law (BCL) in University College Cork and a diploma in Health Economics from the National University of Ireland.
Prior to commencing his training in ophthalmic surgery, Mr. Guerin received his academic Doctorate from University College, Dublin for his full time research in glaucoma eye disease. This body of work has resulted in international and national prizes, awards and publications, and he has lectured worldwide on his findings. He has authored over 20 international peer reviewed publications, including the longest follow up on laser eye surgery in the world (16 years postoperative follow up) and has written several ophthalmology and medico legal book chapters Having commenced his ophthalmology training in Ireland, Mr. Guerin was the only person in Ireland to be accepted onto the National Higher Surgical Training Scheme for Ophthalmic Surgery in 2009. At the end of his surgical training in Ireland, he received his Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST), indicating proficiency in all aspects of ophthalmic medicine and surgery. He has further been awarded Membership to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Ophthalmology).
He has completed international advanced surgical and eye laser training and was accepted onto the prestigious Cornea and Anterior Segment program at Moorfields Eye Hospital London in 2012. At Moorfields, Mr Guerin completed a Fellowship specialising in cataract, cornea, eye laser surgery, keratoconus and anterior segment eye surgery.
Prior to this, he also completed a Fellowship in Refractive Laser and Cataract Surgery in the Mater Misericordiae University and Private Hospitals, Dublin. Mr Guerin is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI Ophth), a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London (MRCOphth), and a member of the Irish College of Ophthalmology (ICO). He is also a member of the European and UK and Ireland Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS, UKISCRS) and the Medico- Legal Society of Ireland. Of note, he adds all his cataract and eye laser surgery results to a central European database (EUREQUO) run by the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons and his outcomes are audited continuously. He is a regular speaker at international conferences and is a formal examiner of other eye surgeons for the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Mr. Guerin also sits on the Public Affairs Committee of the Irish College of Ophthalmology.
